Medullary serotonergic neurons and adjacent neurons that express neurokinin-1 receptors are both involved in chemoreception in vivo.
Nattie EE, Li A, Richerson GB, Lappi DA (2004) Medullary serotonergic neurons and adjacent neurons that express neurokinin-1 receptors are both involved in chemoreception in vivo. J Physiol 556(1):235-253. doi: 10.1113/jphysiol.2003.059766 PMID: 14724193
Summary: The retrotrapezoid nucleus contains neurokinin-1 receptor (NK-1r)-expressing neurons that are involved in chemoreception. NK-1r-expressing neurons are also present in areas that contain medullary serotonergic neurons. These serotonergic neurons have been shown to be chemosensitive in vitro. With two 100-nl injections of 1 µM SP-SAP (Cat. #IT-07), anti-SERT-SAP (Cat. #IT-23), or both, the authors examined whether both cell populations are involved in chemoreception in vivo in rats. The results support that separate populations of serotonergic and NK-1r-expressing neurons are each involved in chemoreception in vivo.

Objective: To determine interactive sites in the sensory vagal complex of rat brain using dual immunolabeling of antisera recognizing the AT1-AR and Ang II.
Summary: In the rat sensory vagal complex, AT-1A receptors are strategically positioned for involvement in modulation of the postsynaptic excitability and intracrine hormone-like effects of Ang II. In addition, these receptors have distributions consistent with diverse roles in regulation of transmitter release, regional blood flow and/or vascular permeability.

Melanopsin (Opn4) requirement for normal light-induced circadian phase shifting

Objective: To investigate the role of melanopsin in circadian photoentrainment in mammals.
Summary: The study focused on understanding how melanopsin, an opsin-based photopigment, affects the circadian rhythms in mammals. By generating melanopsin-null mice and observing their response to light-induced circadian phase shifting, the research demonstrated that while these mice maintain some entrainment to light/dark cycles, their phase resetting in response to monochromatic light is severely attenuated. This highlights melanopsin’s critical role in circadian photoentrainment, alongside other mechanisms that contribute to this process.
Usage: Anti-Melanopsin (AB-N38) was incubated with tissue for 24 hr at 4°C at a 1:2,500 dilution in a TBS incubating buffer containing 1% bovine serum albumin, 0.25% carrageenan lambda and 0.003% Triton X-100.
