Selective lesions of basal forebrain cholinergic neurons produce anterograde and retrograde deficits in a social transmission of food preference task in rats.

Vale-Martinez A, Baxter MG, Eichenbaum H (2002) Selective lesions of basal forebrain cholinergic neurons produce anterograde and retrograde deficits in a social transmission of food preference task in rats. Eur J Neurosci 16(6):983-998. doi: 10.1046/j.1460-9568.2002.02153.x

Summary: Injections of 0.2 µg 192-Saporin (Cat. #IT-01) were made into either the medial septum/vertical limb of the diagonal band (MS/VDB), or the nucleus basalis magnocellularis/substantia innominata (NBM/SI) of rats. MS/VDB lesions had no effect on anterograde memory, while NBM/SI lesions strongly impaired immediate and 24-hour retention. In contrast, MS/DVB lesions produced significant memory deficits in a long-delay retrograde memory test.

Substance P-saporin lesion of neurons with NK1 receptors in one chemoreceptor site in rats decreases ventilation and chemosensitivity.

Summary: The authors injected 0.1 pmol SP-SAP (Cat. #IT-07) into the retrotrapezoid nucleus/parapyramidal region of rats. The lesioned animals demonstrated hypoventilation while at rest, decreased response to high CO2 levels, and a tendency to sleep less.

Identification of a potential ejaculation generator in the spinal cord.

Truitt WA, Coolen LM (2002) Identification of a potential ejaculation generator in the spinal cord. Science 297(5586):1566-1569. doi: 10.1126/science.1073885

Summary: The authors lesioned a specific population of rat spinothalamic neurons using 6-8 injections of 4 ng SSP-SAP (Cat. #IT-11). Whereas the treated rats exhibited no change in sexual behavior such as mounts and intromissions, ejaculatory behavior was completely abolished. The data suggest that this population of neurons may function as an ejaculation generator in the spinal cord.

Memory consolidation and the amygdala: A systems perspective

McGaugh JL (2002) Memory consolidation and the amygdala: A systems perspective. Trends Neurosci 25(9):456-461. doi: 10.1016/s0166-2236(02)02211-7

Objective: To investigate the involvement of basolateral region of the amygdala (BLA) projections.

Summary: The BLA acts via projections to brain regions involved in forming and consolidating memories of different kinds of experiences.

Usage: Lesions of nucleus basalis magnocellularis (NBM) induced by infusions of 192 IgG-SAP block the memory enhancement (in a 48-hr retention test), as induced by post-training infusions of noradrenaline administered into the basolateral amygdala immediately after inhibitory avoidance training.
