ERK2 is a serine/threonine kinase activated by mitogen-activated protein kinase 2 (MEK2) through phosphorylation of threonine 183 and tyrosine 185. It phosphorylates substrates such as microtubule-associated protein 2 (MAP2) and myelin basic protein, functioning as a key component of the MAP kinase signaling pathway. ERK2 transmits signals from growth factors, neurotransmitters, and hormones at the cell surface to transcriptional programs in the nucleus.
