Entamoeba histolytica (Eh) is a protozoan parasite responsible for amebic dysentery and liver abscess. The cyst wall of E. histolytica is composed of chitin fibrils and three families of chitin-binding lectins, including Jacob. Jacob is a cyst wall–specific glycoprotein, and antibodies against it can be used to study cyst formation and the biology of E. histolytica infection.
