The Src kinase family comprises eight non-receptor tyrosine kinases with similar domain organization, including Src itself. Src is involved in regulating processes such as embryonic development and cell growth. The viral counterpart, pp60src, encoded by the Rous sarcoma virus, functions as a protein kinase capable of phosphorylating tyrosine residues in target proteins. This viral src gene product is a key factor in the oncogenic activity of avian sarcoma virus.
